I love teaching reading groups and have recently been using math groups to guide my instruction. In this blog you will find ideas that I use in my classroom to make these groups work!Sarah Hankinsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13766383684259205289noreply@blogger.comBlogger257125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3050390502036438768.post-41756184434141674582020-12-18T09:03:00.000-05:002020-12-18T09:03:09.633-05:00Christmas Phonics Freebie!<div>Merry Christmas!<br /><br />We had 2 days off of school this week for ice. Back for one day and then off for break! This was a quick activity that my students completed at the end of our reading block. The words are ones that we have either had in spelling or part of our phonics lessons. I didn't even print all of the ornament pictures - just displayed them on my Smart Board from my computer! It has helped my teacher heart so much to be back!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="School District of Somerset - Summer School" height="320" src="https://www.somerset.k12.wi.us/SummerSchool/Summer%202019.jpg" width="640" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a>Some of the ELA activities that we have worked on have been a reinforcement of CVC and short vowel sounds.<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
We worked on stamping (I gave my students their own set of stamps and a stamp pad and then cleaned them afterwards) and reading short vowel passages. [Note: I used a marker to model what they were going to do with their stamps. The directions don't say anything about stamps in case you can't use yours or don't have enough.]</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HuUy9nCkWQLw9hQr-pWKLPEO38FF9m98/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" data-original-height="569" data-original-width="751" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgt0er6aif4ZhNaZZ6kueDR4j0xSe1RyclMWY54cT7ur2UUd3G4a_RJ-UmV0vURy39NF65zyNkPEuVevQA8aoDuJeUXf3VaZcjIxXKx_Ty3BDOGfGAH99gk7-gWax-MASANqffT6oRZ-u4/s320/Slide2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
These <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Phonics-Reading-Comprehension-Passages-And-Questions-BUNDLE-Distance-Learning-1723565">reading passages</a> from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/A-Teachable-Teacher">A Teachable Teacher</a> are some of my favorite and go-to activities for phonics. She has made them digital versions in case you are teaching virtually this fall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Phonics-Reading-Comprehension-Passages-And-Questions-BUNDLE-Distance-Learning-1723565"><img border="0" data-original-height="575" data-original-width="755" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjd2W3Fhk8yh4RDb1bdPygiY5NDQ1osR1kWuG-E1c0_1_FqxQmbJMe7IGjstXuJQ6ZObMD8HNk6b6vC-UQ8LXTFtzeMVbR4V2AzwcFtXiog7cDqfxrYHjDCSEOEAsWZ6vjS7KM7VXp3gAw/s320/Slide3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
And we have used some of my short vowel activities that I have made over the years. Here's some pictures of our work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the first things we cover in spelling/word study when we return to school are short vowel sounds. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Short-Vowel-Unit-4605235">Here's some of the activities that we will do.</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Short-Vowel-Unit-4605235"><img alt="Short Vowel Unit" src="https://ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Short-Vowel-Unit-4605235-1560687105/original-4605235-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
And we practiced reading and solving word problems. Here's one of the pages that we worked on today. Click on the picture below or <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HuUy9nCkWQLw9hQr-pWKLPEO38FF9m98/view?usp=sharing">HERE to download a set of the word problems</a>. I've also included the CVC word pages above in this download.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HuUy9nCkWQLw9hQr-pWKLPEO38FF9m98/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" data-original-height="667" data-original-width="577" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWi0DkBve4-1WeqXTmBp3DA1vwZjDkEAqrEWh_q8pu926oYcv_UyHbvFSRnMXwPgPndJ4b1xI82Q4d_6ZkkSQmGV1-XzxYW2TJItjJgiTdcydzXj_6KTfXqOVXydGijqrrX0BwOU6fGn8/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="276" /></a></div>
I hope the freebie will help as you return to the classroom or teach virtually. And enjoy what time you have left of the summer!</div>

Wait.<br />
What?<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<img alt="Summer School / Home" src="https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn%3AANd9GcSiVPkQ3xuIlOgn9Mv8kWm-FTZBB1IoHLcRTjRBZCdZHMfbJio%3Ahttps%3A%2F%2Fwww.ldisd.net%2Fcms%2Flib5%2FTX01817232%2FCentricity%2FDomain%2F1493%2FSummer-banner.png&usqp=CAU" /></div>
Yep! Summer school! I have been back in the classroom for 2 weeks (thankfully just Monday-Thursday) for several hours a day. It's been great to be back on a schedule and to teach!<br />
<a name='more'></a>I have a couple of students and we are working on number sense to be ready for second grade. Here's a peek into some of the activities, along with links to some of the products that I have used, along with a freebie for you to download of tens and ones cards.<br />
<br />
We started out using dry erase boards and markers (I stocked their desks with supplies so they don't need to borrow from anyone else - and that's not possible anymore!) with writing the number shown. I used these magnetic base 10 blocks that are magnetic! I found them on Amazon.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn2sFtsODOWImBfl6p77EGRDLn1ACl0lfXKalXgGxOWwYaFheoGnLbIo0FonDoPA6oonBEj8P5nT9uWoQUbMbXRRL-nrFKOetklj7NfFFhc12y6i-IcTrLEMO7ILgTRfVORt7AvUPiSsk/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="601" data-original-width="569" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn2sFtsODOWImBfl6p77EGRDLn1ACl0lfXKalXgGxOWwYaFheoGnLbIo0FonDoPA6oonBEj8P5nT9uWoQUbMbXRRL-nrFKOetklj7NfFFhc12y6i-IcTrLEMO7ILgTRfVORt7AvUPiSsk/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="302" /></a></div>
Then we used these task cards that I made to practice writing. We use prodigy online and some of the problems were tricking my guys so the cards were a practice before we got online.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s0Wqx1CvcKVsBoqu3i1MKDw0bGEOjQow/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" data-original-height="575" data-original-width="745" height="246" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGjJ1liZdlbpXJ0HEMcDVOHUV00eMoohM77ijcAnoE6_JODWBp8FtHbu_6t99A6vR-DLjyNSP0zXB6YRR-oAyyM9CUM9Fg7gB3oNiuWxBpWHmkuJdW3x5Yx7XTRFpYqjdLpHNM2gmhtLg/s320/Slide2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Click on the picture of <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1s0Wqx1CvcKVsBoqu3i1MKDw0bGEOjQow/view?usp=sharing">HERE</a> to download the tens and ones cards.<br />
<br />
Then we practiced using <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Place-Value-Tens-and-Ones-Task-Cards-and-Worksheets-4838295">these task cards</a> from TpT by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/The-Chocolate-Teacher">The Chocolate Teacher</a>.<br />

I absolutely love these <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Tens-and-Ones-Mystery-Picture-Beach-1-120-1232556">tens and ones pictures</a> and own most of them! Since it's summer, we are working on the beach picture. Check out <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teach-With-Laughter">Teach With Laughter</a> for great ideas!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

I hope this gives you some ideas of different things to use <b>and</b> that you will be back in the classroom soon! Short vowel ideas coming soon.....<br />

Please check out the freebies link at the top of the page. I have added 3 things there in the last week.<br />
<br />
A new item that I had the chance to use for one day in my classroom before being shut down was this to practice <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B-m3gCz4a20imywd313bXrpQ-iZLdutt/view?usp=sharing">10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less</a>. Prints great on colored paper and I did laminate mine, but that's not necessary.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B-m3gCz4a20imywd313bXrpQ-iZLdutt/view?usp=sharing"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="1056" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigDuA0p_61GZgoZGQKjj3HyjpGpYSfSm72CIrEaL9aftTSh9UFGoHg8mJYigjluVnsRhI_Mk3_6ZaIx4e8qBaKYKy3y78QxcjT42WmTBjJ7AX2oBdThSkYm3kE3rvfVRtU0LxgzAih96A/s320/spin+and+cover+board+games.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Just provide your student with a paper clip to use the spinners and markers for the board. We played until we had 5 in a row. <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B-m3gCz4a20imywd313bXrpQ-iZLdutt/view?usp=sharing">There are 4 different boards to download and use.</a><br />
<br />
Best wishes to you!<br />

<div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
My second grade class has been busy solving two digit addition problems. They are such hard workers! I was blown away this week, watching one struggle and his team member leaned over his desk and walked him through step-by-step how to solve the problem. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4zieqXs2OCiudWVKPZgXGG19JroowV35YZ28rinVYS4FsfoA3dAIUmZ9nE_Ub5Ha0_8xBvArHhyviuHhPGCbH6GItXMoiLgEH-cQVH1mVSz5-45NVJCxcDjka1Sjye2Fq4aCaK1uYws/s1600/2+digit+blog+image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1049" data-original-width="737" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ4zieqXs2OCiudWVKPZgXGG19JroowV35YZ28rinVYS4FsfoA3dAIUmZ9nE_Ub5Ha0_8xBvArHhyviuHhPGCbH6GItXMoiLgEH-cQVH1mVSz5-45NVJCxcDjka1Sjye2Fq4aCaK1uYws/s640/2+digit+blog+image.jpg" width="448" /></a></div>
<a name='more'></a>In my last five years being in second grade, I've gotten bored at times during our double digit units because so many times we do the same thing. every. single. day. I have some great ideas and activities that I have found to share with you that will keep your students engaged.<br />
<br />
This math craft has a variety of options to practice solving addition and subtraction problems. We had a blast solving, checking our work, and then putting the craft together this week. I absolutely love the riddles, game, and crafts from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Teaching-Trove">Teaching Trove on TpT</a>!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Valentines-Day-Math-Craft-5178696"><img alt="Valentine's Day Math Craft" border="0" src="https://ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Valentine-s-Day-Math-Craft-5178696-1579660392/original-5178696-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This color by code packet reviews other number sense skills after the students solve the problems. This was another favorite this week! This is from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Copper-Classroom">Copper Classroom on TpT</a>. Check out their great addition and subtraction activities!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-2-Digit-Addition-with-Regrouping-Color-by-Code-Printables-5007360"><img alt="Winter 2-Digit Addition with Regrouping Color-by-Code Printables" border="0" src="https://ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Winter-2-Digit-Addition-with-Regrouping-Color-by-Code-Printables-5007360-1578858558/original-5007360-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
And these addition spinners turned into a great review for my early finishers. There are 4 spinners to print, laminate, and go! Use dry erase boards to record and solve the problems. </div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<span style="text-align: start;">I've just finished reading </span><u style="text-align: start;">Game Changer</u><span style="text-align: start;"> by Donalyn Miller and Colby Sharp. Wow. The book is packed full of ways to make books real and alive for your students ... how to update your classroom library ... finding newly published books to add to your library ... to finding ways to get books into the hands of your students and their families.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFK6omRNG6z9Xcrz3HpodESAolAEjrPjNv2HK-QyH7SniM3x0NDULqUudpUxQmC3OmgKLDm_C2Sxex0SSmeHNkDo__Zv58Z-alLVDMg0-Hk00tLQm397Qjyy3o6DyJDk143RorK5NFJvc/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="499" data-original-width="867" height="230" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFK6omRNG6z9Xcrz3HpodESAolAEjrPjNv2HK-QyH7SniM3x0NDULqUudpUxQmC3OmgKLDm_C2Sxex0SSmeHNkDo__Zv58Z-alLVDMg0-Hk00tLQm397Qjyy3o6DyJDk143RorK5NFJvc/s400/Slide3.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
So check out these updates in not only my own classroom library, but also in my thinking about children and books.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">

<a name='more'></a>The book spoke about highlighting a new book and/or a book that you want to promote in your library. This is Mo Willems' newest release, <u>Because</u>. I wrote a quick recommendation and put it on the top shelf of one of my bookcases. It has been read by most of my students in the short time since it's release. I will change the book out sometime this week with some new books I picked up at the Virginia State Reading Assocation (VSRA) conference this weekend in Norfolk.<br />

Another great way to let your parents and families know what books you recommend is to highlight a few in a letter you send home with your Scholastic Book Club order forms. Tore the order forms out and listed some of the most popular books, along with prices, and the code from Scholastic to get a free book if parents order $25+ online!</div>

<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
At the beginning of the school year I put out on my personal Facebook page about wanting to be able to send home books to each of my students throughout the year. In just a few hours, all of my 23 students had been sponsored to receive 10 books during our second grade year. Here's some of the books they have been able to take home for their personal libraries. I've searched for the $1 books throughout the year. Extra books were sent home in December, as I purchase a book for Christmas break to have at home. Extra books will be purchased for the end of the year for the same reason.</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
In <u>Game Changer</u>, page 15 discusses how book ownership is an important role for reading. We also have read and discussed as a faculty that we need to be willing to lose a book instead of losing a reader. I allow my students (and other children in our building) to borrow my books. I have an app on my iPhone to check books out so I can keep track of who has a book. Instead of stressing SO much about <b>my</b> books (and I still do some!), I make sure they have something at home to read. Parents have been great in helping return books to school.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIFSmyLEQ9Q46ED4FazFBBb_7FexA8qp0e8o2XwvsL8ArtCk4qOhHxMu6WonPajRB5StWaz6-NuZ1A6aitDkPSLCTYGYnzUjWccbR_OMJ35Yg__4KT2Ss_6MCOsp7r4mmgo94PRiVyTEE/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="653" data-original-width="655" height="319" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIFSmyLEQ9Q46ED4FazFBBb_7FexA8qp0e8o2XwvsL8ArtCk4qOhHxMu6WonPajRB5StWaz6-NuZ1A6aitDkPSLCTYGYnzUjWccbR_OMJ35Yg__4KT2Ss_6MCOsp7r4mmgo94PRiVyTEE/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">
Do you have a very popular book or series? One that the book bin is always empty? Well, that's <u>Dog Man</u> in my room! I finally figured out a system to lend and get these books back! I not only have them checked out in my phone, but also bought some of these library cards from Amazon and we keep track of who has the book this way, too! The students who want a Dog Man will look through the library cards and ask the student who has that book to read quicker! </div>

Virginia is adding Computer Science standards to our state standards for the next school year. Our ITRT has worked with others in the county to create a list of children's literature to pair with the standards. Between this list and the information from <a href="https://www.thetechieteacher.net/p/techie-read.html">Julie at The Techie Teacher</a> blog, I have worked to add a lot of techie books into my instruction. The picture below is just a small sampling of these books.</div>

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<span style="text-align: start;">We know as educators of the importance of school attendance. But what do your families know about it? For the last three years our school has had a school-wide push for attendance - not just being at school, but coming on time AND staying all day.</span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://awareness.attendanceworks.org/resources/promotional-materials/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="All tools can be downloaded and used without express permission from the Attendance Awareness Campaign. </div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a><a href="https://www.attendanceworks.org/">Attendance Works</a> is an amazing site, full of printables and information to use with your families. The Attendance Committee at my school (which I chair) has used the graphics and printables, ready to print and send home.<br />
<br />
With ESSA, attendance is a large piece of accreditation. <a href="https://www.attendanceworks.org/chronic-absence/the-problem/">Attendance Works</a> has a part of their site to explain the difference between truancy and chronic absenteeism. Our school had a problem with attendance and we knew we must get it under control.<br />
<br />
Our committee started having homeroom teachers chart their <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1x6dsek2GHIfzz3teWyIIgyFTJ7TeVNgN/view?usp=sharing">perfect attendance on coloring sheets</a>. For every day they have 100% attendance AND on time, they colored in a letter. After the word was completely colored in, their class had extra recess or hat day or eat lunch in the classroom. The charts have longer words and beginning on the third chart, if a student leaves early, they can't color in a letter. Our chronic absenteeism in our school has dropped in the last two years!<br />
<br />
Possible ideas to help promote attendance:<br />
1. This bulletin board has just been put up in the front lobby of our school (ignore the off center and not straight letters).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRE86YxEqT0XHRV5qepdAdTVpwThTKJ-zHaz6iurujSeiw9uGZrGHQX9UNGR2fMlssIiwnN_yePX1ptIZ2GhJ47wjx8wlnLpJvlmGaEpprOOXidl7xG-jW57TcwKxbBnTnGqIleMeLRcs/s1600/attendance+picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="641" data-original-width="553" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjRE86YxEqT0XHRV5qepdAdTVpwThTKJ-zHaz6iurujSeiw9uGZrGHQX9UNGR2fMlssIiwnN_yePX1ptIZ2GhJ47wjx8wlnLpJvlmGaEpprOOXidl7xG-jW57TcwKxbBnTnGqIleMeLRcs/s320/attendance+picture.jpg" width="276" /></a></div>
<br />
A second display case has a picture of all of the children who had perfect attendance during the first quarter of the year.<br />
<br />
2. Classes with perfect attendance are announced each morning. We cheer when we hear our name!<br />
<br />
3. We have created and/or used parts of the literature on the Attendance Works site to educate our families.<br />
<br />
Here's a link to the attendance pages that we use in our school.<br />

I haven't met a group of students who doesn't love to read animal books. National Geographic books are some of our favorites in the classroom library. And <u>Fly Guy</u> has a great selection, but the absolute best are from the <u>Who Would Win?</u> series. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I believe that my students in particular love them so much because it gives them a chance to "see" even if they have never been to a zoo or aquarium. I've been trying as much as possible to link our reading to science and social studies units. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sharks-Nonfiction-Text-Features-4252518">This particular nonfiction reading was for us to work on text features.</a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sharks-Nonfiction-Text-Features-4252518"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="1056" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjL8DyN3tzTxl2MkuMPMpNE0MAuS4rpTeFtdrxISJAbdjB7pGBW9quRaVFA8k-iwT4vip1a0dpW0dZQsi-Q11vsevvux6ZK-rWDJOpSR5uLobaTSvJEoD8xePN6R99xk1-oIZYiIZDXvrs/s320/all+about+sharks+text+features+booklet.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<br />
This little booklet is perfect to use with a variety of shark nonfiction reading, which you probably already have in your classroom. Use articles from World Book Online for Kids or your favorite Nat Geo book.<br />

We are in a month long place value/number sense unit in our math curriculum. We have covered place value, value of a number through the hundreds place, rounding to the nearest ten, and comparing numbers. I created this <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FIzEjlZMDh9FgpLg829N4uylfojtQ9fz/view?usp=sharing">little unit as a Christmas freebie</a> for you! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-G_-Nmghm6Y0X28t5LTNlNwT-Bnyas06diahoD2n0vlHc68r8Xy_Cdso3jwJrEWxImXmWAWSdZjEdhVm4y8tI2TDHOma1viBjIUI75r1nzXxkOqH9H8IOPFxl-pPR1ERd-T96-0ZabXg/s1600/money+picture.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="795" data-original-width="605" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-G_-Nmghm6Y0X28t5LTNlNwT-Bnyas06diahoD2n0vlHc68r8Xy_Cdso3jwJrEWxImXmWAWSdZjEdhVm4y8tI2TDHOma1viBjIUI75r1nzXxkOqH9H8IOPFxl-pPR1ERd-T96-0ZabXg/s640/money+picture.jpg" width="486" /></a></div>
We have been using these <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B074L8J3ZP/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1">coin boxes</a> to practice counting collections of coins and to support our money lessons. Second graders in Virginia are to count pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters to $2.00. The second part of our standards states that the second graders will compare amounts to $2.00. This is something that my students struggle with, especially the children who have a hard time correctly counting the amounts as they in some circumstances have to count 2 sets of coins and then compare them using greater than, less than, and equal to.<br />
<br />
When I came to second grade from first grade (I did 2 years of first/second combo classes), I had a hard time finding materials to use to cover this, so I created my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comparing-Money-SOL-27-3728247">comparing money mini unit</a>.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Comparing-Money-SOL-27-3728247"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="1056" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhV4qxWy2_FTBYhuasCJ7MQLFetfT2ipsMoEARc2juLyXdASrg3SqnQ5roVDZy82hcIBE_5rzIiayFZz-c8rjQdjvnak7zeUGlAxQ_BX2i7m92x-6GxAga7e_dNG4iPX47-pXRyrpO_zDc/s400/compare+money.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
There are 2 sets of task cards with recording pages. This image is from one of the sets, which only require the children to look at a given amount and decide which is greater than, etc. The second set has 2 amounts to count before comparing.<br />
<br />
Well, we still needed more practice. So this happened:<br />
(and who can't pass up these cute unicorns?!)<br />

here's the compare two sets of coins in which the amounts need to be counted first<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

and the recording page for the cards (and there's an answer key included)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And if you click on one of the images from the unicorn set, you can download it for free! I hope your students have success at comparing money!<br />

A couple of posts ago I shared that my second graders were working on double digit addition and subtraction. Well, we are 4 full days into subtraction with borrowing. We do a quick review each day before beginning the lesson. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last week when I introduced this, we started using unifix cubes - our best friend!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First we built the number on top of the problem - 37.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVnWiSdcLR5c-KNMXkB7iWwCvufXi0UBRGFd9P1inxLIvydSjouTfOTO51bmQJd0spa892JpAlxaAyt-fFOxbMoZhA5aSnemq3hey8sHXD-vWXybZCD_-41t1Ju9eF1IjMSKMbJGAdjco/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVnWiSdcLR5c-KNMXkB7iWwCvufXi0UBRGFd9P1inxLIvydSjouTfOTO51bmQJd0spa892JpAlxaAyt-fFOxbMoZhA5aSnemq3hey8sHXD-vWXybZCD_-41t1Ju9eF1IjMSKMbJGAdjco/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When we saw that we couldn't take 8 away from 7, we borrowed from the tens and broke it up into 10 cubes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSiQJMo84B91g8H2B95grQiZjunQg3wMZPMngh3L8Mnbv-ASWmOpttWqHpqHzJ_7plrAvdg2-QSm-UC_Dr-FcEuVXRqkHhRaXiTcfokb8bcmP6KX7xBqgLe_xp14zlP74ONLJb6EFRURY/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSiQJMo84B91g8H2B95grQiZjunQg3wMZPMngh3L8Mnbv-ASWmOpttWqHpqHzJ_7plrAvdg2-QSm-UC_Dr-FcEuVXRqkHhRaXiTcfokb8bcmP6KX7xBqgLe_xp14zlP74ONLJb6EFRURY/s320/Slide2.JPG" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then we changed the numbers on the top of our problem to show what we have using the unifix cubes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG8ZBKfPerLwr_ApysV05-fWk9i4xEy3P-Fh7f2y0__Xn7OC5fRagfdtP5u2zPFu00jUXYqUEAgVpHmj7aQyqDkOVXxdLgKgk-PAi9ydUACBGwu2EKa0MVlLpnZeOoTwShGFsiXfWH7Ts/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1056" data-original-width="816" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG8ZBKfPerLwr_ApysV05-fWk9i4xEy3P-Fh7f2y0__Xn7OC5fRagfdtP5u2zPFu00jUXYqUEAgVpHmj7aQyqDkOVXxdLgKgk-PAi9ydUACBGwu2EKa0MVlLpnZeOoTwShGFsiXfWH7Ts/s320/Slide3.JPG" width="247" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And now time to start subtracting! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
17 - 8 = 9</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
And 2 - 1 = 1</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We have tried writing the problems on our own, but some of my children have sloppy handwriting and writing the problems on their own is challenging and frustrating, so I quickly put this together to help alleviate some of that frustration.</div>

Having taught fourth grade for eight years before moving down to the primary grades (5 years in first, 2 years as a first/second combination, and now just in second), I knew it would be easier for older children to do this, but my first graders? Several teachers sat down and talked how we could do this. We knew the importance and that it would both motivate and challenge our students to work harder and push themselves in ways that we couldn't. But what were we to do with all of that data? Math standards from unit tests ... reading levels ... iStation reports ...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQqohEFJItSLo4sViSXZWsXJEYsJiZEHQK2enWD6zuM4a668jR1xIED1Xl5WtC4pIMb9lpkH12JYa5FN57wZGMiSDaPEKRqROLaBbp90-OT92zfQmSbAXHOCpFApaKSlAkqnpA97JnHqA/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="595" data-original-width="869" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQqohEFJItSLo4sViSXZWsXJEYsJiZEHQK2enWD6zuM4a668jR1xIED1Xl5WtC4pIMb9lpkH12JYa5FN57wZGMiSDaPEKRqROLaBbp90-OT92zfQmSbAXHOCpFApaKSlAkqnpA97JnHqA/s1600/Slide1.JPG" /></a></div>
We decided charts would be the easiest for us to create. Our report cards are standards based for kindergarten through second grade, so a 4-3-2-1 vertical chart made the most sense to us. The first year we made math charts for first and second grades and had them in chronological order according to our pacing guide.<br />
<br />
During the summer after that first year I wondered how I could add in spelling. That year I was teaching the combination class and the number of words on the tests were different, so I created different charts using the percentages that they could color in after the weekly tests.<br />
<br />
With all that said, here's what we came up with.<br />
<br />
These are my folders this year. (In my combination classes I had different color folders to keep them easily sorted.)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf3ytXXkFQWDq_hNt3-_hnDZzurfVvFiUuIl0kxh-3tMlZ9PtKQ3L_OZPOdHGxxGLiGSSGrtTQHUhy3WMvSiKVMtZhN8tNOav2tI8SjXrRBYR7myBnFxWpff4MNtGAthHdJ7VMFlbDGNg/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="755" data-original-width="569" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhf3ytXXkFQWDq_hNt3-_hnDZzurfVvFiUuIl0kxh-3tMlZ9PtKQ3L_OZPOdHGxxGLiGSSGrtTQHUhy3WMvSiKVMtZhN8tNOav2tI8SjXrRBYR7myBnFxWpff4MNtGAthHdJ7VMFlbDGNg/s400/Slide2.JPG" width="301" /></a></div>
This is what the math standards charts look like. The SOL (Standard of Learning in Virginia) is listed at the top, along with what part of the school year we covered it. But our pacing guide changed over the summer after we had already copied all of our folders, so we left them for this year.<br />
<br />
The green section was from one test - identifying ordinal positions and writing the ordinal position. I sometimes take summative grades that I use for my data folders in a large unit, but other times, in smaller units, I take just one for several parts of the standard.<br />
<br />
Depending on how well they do on the summative assessments correlates with what is colored in on the chart.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo32mnzseN1Q8wL1zcQXVgeHnojGmCrrrX-JG7KDKFVw0K4ozon4OOHb_1vuYShnrQYGWX6c_h0PCq1qDVqMFsbxpQXXyi6N8IFNeClj1382jPlW6MJrz1iCuZW8p5B6XcJ08JVIMjqbs/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="775" data-original-width="647" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo32mnzseN1Q8wL1zcQXVgeHnojGmCrrrX-JG7KDKFVw0K4ozon4OOHb_1vuYShnrQYGWX6c_h0PCq1qDVqMFsbxpQXXyi6N8IFNeClj1382jPlW6MJrz1iCuZW8p5B6XcJ08JVIMjqbs/s400/Slide4.JPG" width="333" /></a></div>
When students do not show mastery of a skill, we pull something that matches the content and place in the back of their folder. That work is used to drive our intervention time one to two times a week as needed.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_g0qgnfxlvONyifew8qIbLr7yBoKDrUMgu0w0D3anXg72UvJOoxllrO-RGEhdl7oP18KoRS0AFSyS1aowXyDPtDNa7uui863eo-u0KRDaGXx5Lc4ecSmUBbqfEndBuyyICqJPkxzHT-Q/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="745" data-original-width="571" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_g0qgnfxlvONyifew8qIbLr7yBoKDrUMgu0w0D3anXg72UvJOoxllrO-RGEhdl7oP18KoRS0AFSyS1aowXyDPtDNa7uui863eo-u0KRDaGXx5Lc4ecSmUBbqfEndBuyyICqJPkxzHT-Q/s400/Slide5.JPG" width="306" /></a></div>
This is what the spelling sheets look like. At times it has been a real struggle to get the charts colored in each week due to time constraints. This afternoon when I was having mini conferences with my students to color in their charts from our test, several were excited that they had improved this week's score from last week's. It made me smile!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Do you use data folders or charts? Pros and cons of them? Do you include something different in yours?<br />
<br />
I will be honest - it's a lot of work at the beginning, but once you have it finished, you shouldn't need to change it (unless your pacing guide changes!) and not only is it a motivator for your students, but a great piece of information to use in parent conferences.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Until next time,</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's divided into addition with <i>and </i>without regrouping.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Winter-Double-Digit-Addition-and-Subtraction-Unit-3600786"><img border="0" data-original-height="816" data-original-width="1056" height="247" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEheO1QIZEaqe243nRemMgLFyjXCmKoStgBPGvfPaPwzBItEwYQ2RSxEGsUYKEsmky41-wVFUkDAAFA1yHDXPeNYwr-9z6OH3_58GNFBcOdnaWEUd7Ou6nmg3wZWHwpz6NdbbwNehnDhico/s320/Slide13.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
Last week was our 100th day of school!</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
<img height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9D48_CzmDgVtj3IvZIn4NKIUfeQYy3L0hhzk4hp1c4p6-B_Vz-uze_kbZlNttlId8AyJjo053qlXR7OtCHNkkQUDAZoy9ME-2WDoYmdu8bAst2NncuLdlmIiYD7lglemvtlp1xQNmIIE/s320/100TH+DAY.jpg" width="320" /></div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
It's just taking me until now to put it into a post! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's what my math board looked like on day 99. We build the number using straws for hundreds, tens, and ones, as well as with money.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrM0hN1jiapL7M1UTuPKQZecKqiGfVipk39R8mZal-4KsDe0Pv6zQ18AJeeftqTzo3LW4LObG8Q3OHuUVhXU4YOD__2dFTW7ch5tQgz2F0975HcPc7GRZ4vx6kC10U8GaHy4DvtX0yYgs/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="673" data-original-width="891" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrM0hN1jiapL7M1UTuPKQZecKqiGfVipk39R8mZal-4KsDe0Pv6zQ18AJeeftqTzo3LW4LObG8Q3OHuUVhXU4YOD__2dFTW7ch5tQgz2F0975HcPc7GRZ4vx6kC10U8GaHy4DvtX0yYgs/s320/Slide2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then on the morning of the 100th day ...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhnL9hR2YlT3oxifScTo7fQSIfOoR6B_16Wx1vwARSl4JN3nc4isyXoBhqF_triyUWQKpsqgKY2WebtvorkbEydwkt0bJ0kTKL7EOh9ng_SEbV8wvV9-7-5o1pzBZ8KkRJwIimcF5pDrA/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="647" data-original-width="845" height="245" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhnL9hR2YlT3oxifScTo7fQSIfOoR6B_16Wx1vwARSl4JN3nc4isyXoBhqF_triyUWQKpsqgKY2WebtvorkbEydwkt0bJ0kTKL7EOh9ng_SEbV8wvV9-7-5o1pzBZ8KkRJwIimcF5pDrA/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
... it was fun to hear what my students knew that they could now do, as well as what they could and couldn't eat!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We built all different kinds of structures using 100 cups, 100 unifix cubes, and 100 building blocks. It was fun to see what they came up with! (No finished structures because all of my pictures had students in them.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGcDH60nLeeQ9FoYM55m20007kP-8FA8B4IOEAMUVJs_MUU7HmBU8pH0IhGjj6TPKkkMtqJuRgHVlf0TNnYPsusUUO4gH2waJoowGL0Q_1Gi6vNF0Wp3kMlqigwQn2i4drvJqKEQ_lBEk/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="641" data-original-width="845" height="242" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGcDH60nLeeQ9FoYM55m20007kP-8FA8B4IOEAMUVJs_MUU7HmBU8pH0IhGjj6TPKkkMtqJuRgHVlf0TNnYPsusUUO4gH2waJoowGL0Q_1Gi6vNF0Wp3kMlqigwQn2i4drvJqKEQ_lBEk/s320/Slide5.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And we had a special 100 day snack of 100 things, building sets of 10s.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRx4hkSl82h07MnduZRqX8KL-bMcbxC_HAeuMvsffSXhQH3Q0h8e_73OvL2t-eYAyL4XBjW7j4AWiETl_tCg1r5aRzsH3aNksKzkCiZLk2WaH1QhIG2FJ4b4ht_uer-yRCq6_rJsusa4E/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="775" data-original-width="589" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhRx4hkSl82h07MnduZRqX8KL-bMcbxC_HAeuMvsffSXhQH3Q0h8e_73OvL2t-eYAyL4XBjW7j4AWiETl_tCg1r5aRzsH3aNksKzkCiZLk2WaH1QhIG2FJ4b4ht_uer-yRCq6_rJsusa4E/s320/Slide3.JPG" width="243" /></a></div>

</div>
<div style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
</div>
We are in the midst of our very long famous people unit in Social Studies. In Virginia, second graders have to know George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington Carver, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, Jackie Robinson, Thurgood Marshall, Helen Keller, and Christopher Columbus. So that I don't overwhelm them, I taught Columbus around Columbus Day in October and MLK last week and this week around Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. We will save Washington and Lincoln for Presidents Day in February.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Benjamin-Franklin-mini-unit-561954"><img border="0" data-original-height="653" data-original-width="573" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5V0ThyphenhyphenlQhKxLjwd9LlACkBALW-814zuz4Rp1E23OdKKhI-LvfVa9IybLBXIm2UwGpenh3FleWIeB51aaQQt-uBvjIc9ItYKWdafj54fdLLKhDYVESXzNRUTY7KX1-Zd7dUKAC6OwrSZY/s320/Franklin+image.jpg" width="280" /></a></div>
The first person we covered this month was Benjamin Franklin. Since he was part of the Social Studies curriculum for first graders and I taught first grade for 8 years, I just grabbed my notebook off the first grade shelf! (I taught a combination of first and second for 2 years and now, thankfully, this year I have just second grade.)<br />
<br />
Some of the books that I used are:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/My-First-Biography-Benjamin-Franklin/dp/0545232562/ref=sr_1_5?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1516123199&sr=1-5&keywords=benjamin+franklin+first+biography"><img alt="Product Details" border="0" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51ibX0+3PeL._AC_US218_.jpg" /></a><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Now-Ben-Inventions-Benjamin-Franklin/dp/0312535694/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1516123086&sr=8-1&keywords=now+and+ben" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61zuKVuME5L._SX450_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here's the unit I created, which includes a reader, word search, vocabulary words with picture cards, and comprehension questions. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year I made a pocket in our Social Studies notebook to keep our reader safe. {See the picture above.}</div>

We have covered rounding, comparing numbers, and using base ten blocks through the thousands. This week we are working on 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less up to 999.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Yesterday we began with 10 more and 10 less using a hundreds chart. We started with two digits numbers and then moved to three digit numbers. This mini unit has a set of task cards with recording page and 7 printables. If you aren't sure about purchasing the unit, <a href="https://drive.google.com/a/bedford.k12.va.us/file/d/1cq4LUXmbzury9TPrwMGEHSkNM-eZLuHD/view?usp=sharing">download this one page</a> freebie which is similar to what is in the packet.<br />

I wanted to thank YOU with a gift! We have been working on alphabetical order to the second and third letter in order to work on guide words, so I created this Christmas tree package sorting activity to practice. Included are 6 trees with presents to sort with the correct tree. I put 2 trees in a bag, making 3 centers. I have also included an alphabetical order cut, sort, glue printable, and a guide word cut, sort, glue printable in this freebie. Click <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Guide-Word-Freebie-3521146">here</a> or on the center picture below to download!<br />

One of my reading groups is working on my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Rudolph-reader-activities-402213">Rudolph reader</a> this week.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

And we are continuing to work on number sense in math. Today we began rounding. About half of my class "got it" in the first couple of numbers. Hopefully tomorrow we will have light bulbs going off everywhere! I have a rounding activity in my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/2nd-Grade-Christmas-Place-Value-Unit-3491096">Christmas Place Value Unit</a>, but I also created 2 sets of task cards and some printables in my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Round-to-the-Nearest-Ten-Unit-3495320">Rounding to the Nearest Ten Unit</a>.<br />

As much as I loved first grade, I love second, also. They become more independent and my class just <i>loves</i> read-to-self!<br />
<br />
Tomorrow we begin our place value unit for the next three weeks, which puts us in between Thanksgiving and Christmas, so I <i>had</i> to make our task cards cutesy! 😃 Here's some of the things that we are going to be working on.<br />

My students this year really benefit from getting up and moving around, especially since our math time is after recess and lunch. I try to have at least one activity a day to have them up and moving. Having these task cards with accompanying recording pages is going to be perfect!<br />
<br />
This all comes from my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/2nd-Grade-Christmas-Place-Value-Unit-3491096">Christmas Place Value Unit</a>. It will be on sale on November 27 and 28 for the TpT Cyber Day Sale!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFrlTfi3MSSnsH858A8g_eC1qyZezbQi2KX6dnhGDNOqd6L-keZlUvzc266hx4dQCj_A3zIVzF3tYJmYZlRg3mDEpypLDhQdmMUV-imqX3DqLY7xs02gCenKzEYmuzdZjn1r7HKt9WvlU/s1600/calendar+image.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFrlTfi3MSSnsH858A8g_eC1qyZezbQi2KX6dnhGDNOqd6L-keZlUvzc266hx4dQCj_A3zIVzF3tYJmYZlRg3mDEpypLDhQdmMUV-imqX3DqLY7xs02gCenKzEYmuzdZjn1r7HKt9WvlU/s400/calendar+image.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I'm talking about missing a doctor's appointment, lunch date with a friend, or taking treats to your kid's school.<br />
Whether your calendar looks like this ...<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a><div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy8V8gf-9KcEgyCDeJkR-PGNjO64kF1ObcH55kjydNSnBr7Td8BglJyjQRf1k3dw_WtaF-C_CyEjMrT2B0EsXaXsLq9_YJ8qOkXCpB6vBEEQO9R9fjo0o1eNI0Mxn3Mx7MdbvawJEKMkU/s1600/Slide4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="225" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy8V8gf-9KcEgyCDeJkR-PGNjO64kF1ObcH55kjydNSnBr7Td8BglJyjQRf1k3dw_WtaF-C_CyEjMrT2B0EsXaXsLq9_YJ8qOkXCpB6vBEEQO9R9fjo0o1eNI0Mxn3Mx7MdbvawJEKMkU/s400/Slide4.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or maybe you had a tear off calendar on your desk at one time like this one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTcbqKepekHltMuOALqF23iRosM06KLu7aw6QzE3SRNqkyNPJwbvHmr_tlJg-4JdUVBxgXv5l7-ig7DL7jG9WRuB5lRUEbVP3OKMtpv0p2J0kWSkpL9wruaFLCqg0dc8PzzyZFmX0_JGM/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="271" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTcbqKepekHltMuOALqF23iRosM06KLu7aw6QzE3SRNqkyNPJwbvHmr_tlJg-4JdUVBxgXv5l7-ig7DL7jG9WRuB5lRUEbVP3OKMtpv0p2J0kWSkpL9wruaFLCqg0dc8PzzyZFmX0_JGM/s320/Slide3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or maybe a little more upscale like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0McMj1T0ifJxS1TAQUHf-rlVY8hh9p8Hi46MmccD-WIwneHZr27lYgcVZgW-PsxmnJri0-64W2IDyAyOlqpMeYfZoNLoa32YCizNs-w9ayePdSXiSVrdnUIEbVR0S7jrV5hwL1RAu6Y/s1600/Slide2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho0McMj1T0ifJxS1TAQUHf-rlVY8hh9p8Hi46MmccD-WIwneHZr27lYgcVZgW-PsxmnJri0-64W2IDyAyOlqpMeYfZoNLoa32YCizNs-w9ayePdSXiSVrdnUIEbVR0S7jrV5hwL1RAu6Y/s320/Slide2.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Or you're completely digital like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8gtppLryyGWgMrwM9GQWngWcFYH8O7KhZG1eEEa_YGWA2cUABY_WPNmPvaNDL4aZ7y5RtO-Yjef-TdT0nsrHuooy3roMULaVNDCk4CcVb1Jmiu7_CRC3NErI5IN8f6J7SYE9r-NL1OLE/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="216" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8gtppLryyGWgMrwM9GQWngWcFYH8O7KhZG1eEEa_YGWA2cUABY_WPNmPvaNDL4aZ7y5RtO-Yjef-TdT0nsrHuooy3roMULaVNDCk4CcVb1Jmiu7_CRC3NErI5IN8f6J7SYE9r-NL1OLE/s320/Slide1.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We all find it necessary to be organized! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
One of the standards in the Standards of Learning in Virginia states that first graders <i>will use calendar language appropriately - words such as yesterday, today, tomorrow, days, months, next week, and last week</i>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To work on this standard, I created some simple little calendars using the 2017 months of April, May, and June to practice. Today my first graders used the April calendar and questions. The calendar packet has 2 pages for each calendar and will be a freebie until March 9, 2017, so snatch it up quickly!</div>

<br />
My first graders just finished reading <u>Flat Stanley on Ice</u>. I just love Flat Stanley and was thrilled to find these books in the Scholastic orders!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcokAF6o3pnNZHCaQF9GSRkutvCK9T2XbsPTqlpsdyNdqNdhYjoHLBJoO7Mgdc9RBntnbmC3M2nlkJ-WMmUbPVfULDdowJ_84z8UpWhNF9Izlojp_3mukDXAB1Pr-1z9OOf1PyWAILfQY/s1600/Slide1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcokAF6o3pnNZHCaQF9GSRkutvCK9T2XbsPTqlpsdyNdqNdhYjoHLBJoO7Mgdc9RBntnbmC3M2nlkJ-WMmUbPVfULDdowJ_84z8UpWhNF9Izlojp_3mukDXAB1Pr-1z9OOf1PyWAILfQY/s400/Slide1.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<a name='more'></a>We read <u>Flat Stanley and the Haunted House</u> around Halloween and they fell in love with Stanley! I have some of the worldwide adventures books in my classroom library (I'm teaching first and second grade and have a wide range of reading levels). When I found <u>Flat Stanley on Ice</u>, I knew it was one we needed to read together!<br />
<br />
Here's some of the activities we worked on:<br />
<br />

<br />
<span style="background-color: white; color: #1e2a5b; font-size: 17.28px;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, Times New Roman, serif;">Second graders begin to use the dictionary to learn how to use guide words. Gulp. Sigh. And alphabetize to the second and third letter. This is such a hard skill, especially since first graders are only expected to alphabetize to the first letter. So since I have now taught a combination first/second class for two years, I have been able to expose my first graders to more challenging content and get them ready for next year by doing more alphabetical order.</span></span><br />

Thanksgiving has come and gone. It's hard to believe how quickly November passed by! We had a different kind of Thanksgiving this year, as we headed to our nation's capital for several days and enjoyed visiting the memorials, monuments, and Smithsonians.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm9yp5GqcLTdp8dybMEOQYdA66kY_vly5s5aRl6xQvGAtSUrAD1mWML3Igq0oMqQ96_8fl4YWGPf22gNeGmWlOI_uM_ndWOYdr_FO_AL4flg-s44QFcaI5-P7OLSgSJ4ks5ECCkj4xFH8/s1600/IMG_2474.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm9yp5GqcLTdp8dybMEOQYdA66kY_vly5s5aRl6xQvGAtSUrAD1mWML3Igq0oMqQ96_8fl4YWGPf22gNeGmWlOI_uM_ndWOYdr_FO_AL4flg-s44QFcaI5-P7OLSgSJ4ks5ECCkj4xFH8/s1600/IMG_2474.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
December temperatures are here in central Virginia! We went from warm to cold! Our Christmas parade was on Sunday evening and as my husband and I waited, the rain came! It was quite chilly, but we had a great time talking while we waited for our daughters on the float from our church.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br /><br />

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We are having some Christmas fun in the classroom! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here's one of my favorite things to do ... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/AbYxfQEr52EzaVk4IWtbI1PrzGw90KvhguPV5QV-HgljAF1DrgkCZVM/"><img alt="These ideas for spreading kindness during the holiday season are perfect for any classroom.: " src="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/564x/39/5b/28/395b28db13195226ce719cb014a1fa49.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love encouraging my children to think of ways to show kindness to other people. This is an amazing resource with freebies to make your own lightbulbs and presents.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

My second graders have been working on guide words. The <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-Guide-Words-Activity-1005981">first activity</a> is one that my friend and teaching partner, Brittany, created. Like you, we have been busy working away! I love this time of the year! We broke out our Thanksgiving centers and have been having a lot of fun. Hang on for a lot of pictures! 😀</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first graders have been working on geometry and these activities were a lot of fun!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This first one is a freebie from Mrs. Plemons Kindergarten. Use pattern blocks to create the turkey feathers! We had a recording page to draw our feathers and count the blocks we used.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Build-a-Turkey-A-Pattern-Block-Math-Center-2210499"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPwkHi-hRAIeQHl0pQqktd_iOtTZ-HPJlTiOSQMc-EjD4KQLOFhJJ8d8rDgx8nBGfc6-MctXSVkpD-B2RsiT-8oC5qH3_EH_hcT_qmN39R_B2uMxe5uFaof_CgtMgS40D-JW1uoPsmyss/s1600/IMG_2344.JPG" /></a></div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Build-a-Turkey-A-Pattern-Block-Math-Center-2210499"><img alt="Build a Turkey: A Pattern Block Math Center" src="https://ecdn1.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Build-a-Turkey-A-Pattern-Block-Math-Center-2210499/original-2210499-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This activity was a lot of fun! The 2D shapes on the feathers go with the turkey. Here's a couple of the turkeys my kiddos put together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
My second graders have been working on guide words. These turkeys have been a great review in our centers this week!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Guide-Words-2883622"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-Tv3e9vjsISbTCuVcY5A74HHLLLrtUjQ3k0q5vjJwTwceqiNzP8eWL__ExKYNiInNH73dYPLGN2vwFkMOrKVN4kpfqTjxM_dBdzeE2D6GHAlp8a6JiLeHFK4Sub1eiV3w3DTNCnz-uOE/s1600/IMG_2339.JPG" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Guide-Words-2883622" style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUs7YFw5jqV2dOndMVmxnMQ2hUsJMrl5tVGdbww-PWzsQ67f5yBmOAKMvVcAtyz_P_cEX9BcT6bheLrfn-LTNLsmWSMAvY9XyCSuVCDFJ2X4qktIq9K7w6Gqjxl-KOXOlsWLF2MS-XJoY/s1600/IMG_2340.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since we have to go to school on Monday & Tuesday next week before our break begins, we are going to work on the task cards in the packet. Click <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Guide-Words-2883622">here</a> or on the image below for the unit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Guide-Words-2883622"><img alt="Thanksgiving Guide Words" src="https://ecdn.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Thanksgiving-Guide-Words-2883622-1479514742/original-2883622-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My second graders are also working on author's purpose. These sorting cards are from <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Authors-Purpose-2163545">Teaching Second Grade</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUdKd3j_dkLbq8BFUMlEmR32IkdRfzjN5rpWkEauHYGF8cwiIoex78RA4aNhRD6BIyu73erXBegL2ob1Iy9_FPcfZyaVQwP1H8xz0Xm5txh1hAUcU3khAt1ntmTTS8QwVVwbZH-b3AZ6E/s1600/IMG_2347.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUdKd3j_dkLbq8BFUMlEmR32IkdRfzjN5rpWkEauHYGF8cwiIoex78RA4aNhRD6BIyu73erXBegL2ob1Iy9_FPcfZyaVQwP1H8xz0Xm5txh1hAUcU3khAt1ntmTTS8QwVVwbZH-b3AZ6E/s1600/IMG_2347.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we sorted, I pulled out some Scholastic book orders and we worked on finding books from the categories.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyfetKJiLIXn0_ofIdG2l_uFEwp1wlQW-pqv-7w0EGAq0y7qZaqTmkC7eKA7z2nYxmo2nQXX4am30V2GOCnBCgOYSOi08L09aDIIOH5tkCGCVLnZiT-3cBigRdwUEB0AKNUmmk3bl3ITs/s1600/IMG_2346.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyfetKJiLIXn0_ofIdG2l_uFEwp1wlQW-pqv-7w0EGAq0y7qZaqTmkC7eKA7z2nYxmo2nQXX4am30V2GOCnBCgOYSOi08L09aDIIOH5tkCGCVLnZiT-3cBigRdwUEB0AKNUmmk3bl3ITs/s1600/IMG_2346.JPG" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My first graders have reviewed rhyming words and one of my absolutely favorite <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Rhyming-Puzzles-Color-Blackline-Mats-1544057">Thanksgiving rhyming</a> activities is this puzzle pack from Jennifer Drake.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Thanksgiving-Rhyming-Puzzles-Color-Blackline-Mats-1544057"><img alt="Thanksgiving Rhyming Puzzles Color & Blackline Mats" src="https://ecdn1.teacherspayteachers.com/thumbitem/Thanksgiving-Rhyming-Puzzles-Color-Blackline-Mats-1544057/original-1544057-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
She includes 5 color puzzles, which we used in centers, and 3 blacklines, which I gave for seat work. My children absolutely loved these this year ... and yes ... I already have the Christmas ones ready to go! 😉</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZ-TaAZ8up4CgKhqXoVOM7hWmmeqlHCpr6pS3QunQLmjAmCw83qdlsv5zm5wNzi3ZHSFqpCTKxxY2CT9C9tWyQkyyjIMDnzzWfedqVBiB2K2k4Hi_sfUZutDSQ_Pvo4f6T1GFekZx2nY/s1600/IMG_2343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYZ-TaAZ8up4CgKhqXoVOM7hWmmeqlHCpr6pS3QunQLmjAmCw83qdlsv5zm5wNzi3ZHSFqpCTKxxY2CT9C9tWyQkyyjIMDnzzWfedqVBiB2K2k4Hi_sfUZutDSQ_Pvo4f6T1GFekZx2nY/s1600/IMG_2343.JPG" /></a></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally a few crafts.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

We have been super busy with reading novels and researching about spiders, along with beginning our money unit in second grade and finishing our skip counting unit in first grade.<br />
<br />
This week we broke out all of our Halloween centers and went to town!<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a>My first graders did a quick short vowel review before we started working on long vowel sounds.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc1XdnMlf1HI9nVvVhkJ02do5R2y2Pa3ccUyox15kIX-osvI1ic6MeZv2WO3ZXgothYBDn41QH1raTkEUfNQoh7OvS-aPzSBYoovWkM8HdVA-TysQpHpOXp_utoCDPZaxVIgY0bp6w7Qk/s1600/Slide5.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgc1XdnMlf1HI9nVvVhkJ02do5R2y2Pa3ccUyox15kIX-osvI1ic6MeZv2WO3ZXgothYBDn41QH1raTkEUfNQoh7OvS-aPzSBYoovWkM8HdVA-TysQpHpOXp_utoCDPZaxVIgY0bp6w7Qk/s400/Slide5.JPG" width="393" /></a></div>
<br />
And my second graders worked on using commas correctly, but also identifying when they were used incorrectly.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3aBS2hyphenhyphenxY2q2qZ96qMvFpJavnJjjcUifqjtdpwxZ4RDgbITQxeXuV3U1Z3J2QsixRhJnFHrtSVtMc0U9fL_WOpdy0E-M8akgodDI3RG2GLYjL5CIQt7nwpfEEygRb67uVN_6_Pyv8Po/s1600/Slide3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJ3aBS2hyphenhyphenxY2q2qZ96qMvFpJavnJjjcUifqjtdpwxZ4RDgbITQxeXuV3U1Z3J2QsixRhJnFHrtSVtMc0U9fL_WOpdy0E-M8akgodDI3RG2GLYjL5CIQt7nwpfEEygRb67uVN_6_Pyv8Po/s400/Slide3.JPG" width="392" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today things were crazy as the fire safety house from our local fire station came, so we read the book <u>Too Many Pumpkins</u>, which is one of my favorites! </div>

One of the reasons I love this story is because the author has written it in such a way that it lends itself to many predictions. If you've ever done a DRTA (directed reading thinking activity), you would know that you could read, pause, predict, read, pause, allow time to change their prediction, and repeat. While we were doing this, when we got to the page below, one of my students said "She has a pumpkin farm!" A couple had already heard the book and knew what was going to happen, so I had to remind them to keep quiet so they wouldn't blurt out what was about to happen.</div>

We completed a couple activities working on cause/effect and problem/solution on the story. Both of these activities were free things I had from other teachers. One of the activities is from Andrea Crawford, the reading specialist in my building, who blogs at <a href="http://www.thisliteracylife.com/2016/10/too-many-pumpkins-mentor-text-for.html">This Literacy Life</a>. She wrote a post about mentor texts to teach problem and solution. I also found this <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Too-Many-Pumpkins-2833371">free activity</a> on Teachers Pay Teachers that has a great activity on cause and effect using <u>Too Many Pumpkins</u>.<br />
