Now I know ...

A fellow blogger, Mrs. Stanford, just learned that she's being moved to first grade and is having a linky party for ideas in her classroom.  Things I now know about firsties ...
~ have LOTS of things in your back-pocket for the moment something goes wrong (and know that it WILL go wrong!)
~ they do best when they know what is going to happen, so prepare them when the schedule will be altered
~ they need visuals, even for behavior (click here to go to my post about behavior calendars; if you want a copy of your own to alter the schedule, please email me at smbhankinson@gmail.com and I will send these to you!)
~ they love to play games and they will love you even more!

I have created a website to link all of the websites we use in the classroom, as well as the ones I recommend my parents to use at home.   Click here or on the bunny below to go to my Porta Portal webpage.  I update this as I find new sites, so check back!

Blessings,

  1. I completely agree with all of these, especially about the visuals! I have a lot of visuals in my classroom for my firsties which seem to work well. :)

  2. I agree as well! I moved from 2nd down to 1st (against my will) and the hardest thing I found was how much help they need in the beginning to do their work. The good thing about moving up is that you can kind of pick up where you left off last year...
I also teach 1st and am your newest follower.

    1. You're exactly right! I have to remind myself at the beginning of the year that I'm starting over again and I can't pick up where we stopped in June!
