fractions freebie

The end of the school year is stressful, isn't it?!?!?!  We are working on our fraction unit and my kiddos have done a great job understanding equal and not equal parts and yesterday we worked on writing a fraction to accompany a picture.

We use the enVision math series and each unit has a ready-to-use game.  The one for the fraction unit had the children decide if the sandwiches were cut in equal parts or not equal parts.

We are going to use the cards below next week.  Click here or on the image below to grab your own cards, along with an assessment page.

I found these books in the dollar section at Target this week.  I am at the beginning stages of a community helper unit to go with the first book.  Do you teach community helpers?  If so, what one piece do you recommend I use?

Have a great weekend!

Earth Day FREEBIE!

Just a quick post ... with an Earth Day freebie!  I don't know about you, but Earth Day has snuck up on me!  We spend a couple of days in our first grade classrooms talking about ways to reduce, reuse, and recycle.  Since these words are difficult to read for some children, I made these word wall cards for you to use.  There's a total of 12 words.  Click here or on the image below to download.

I would love to know if and how you celebrate Earth Day in your classrooms!

Math Groups!

A couple of weeks ago two of our teachers shared how they observed math groups in action at a nearby school and have had them in action in their classrooms.  We decided to give it a try in first grade during our measurement unit!

Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are instruction days and Tuesday/Thursday are group days.

Monday's lesson was on ordering various objects by length and Wednesday's lesson was on estimating and measuring objects with nonstandard units.

Group Stations -
1.) seat work - can be leveled or a review activity
2.) center - an activity focusing on the skill being taught (I had a recording page at my centers for accountability)
3.) small group with teacher - the other teachers in my building have leveled groups, but for these lessons, I had the same activity (with a class of 23 with no adult help during math, I know hands-on activities in math are very challenging!)

Tuesday's Groups -
seat work - deciding which is taller or which is smaller

center - sorting pictures by size; recording page was included

small group - sorting various objects and describing using the words tallest and smallest

Thursday's Groups -
seat work - Annie Moffat's addition/subtraction scoops review activity
center - estimating and measuring objects in pictures using nonstandard units

small group - estimating and measuring objects using connecting cubes

I am using my Measure Up: A Measurement Packet for instruction and center activities.  Check out last week's post about this unit here and download the preview (with a freebie!) and purchase it here

Do you use math groups?  If so, do you do anything differently?  Leave an email address with your comment, as I am giving away one of my measurement packets to a commenter on Saturday morning!

Five for Friday ... Spring Break edition

2. I made a new wreath for our front door.  Everything was on sale at AC Moore this week!

3. My mom, sister, 1 niece, 2 nephews, and I went to the Transportation Museum in central VA yesterday.  My nephews are 3 and 5; this museum encouraged climbing and touching!  It was a lot of fun!

4With the extra time off, I have worked on some new projects for school.  With time winding down, I have a fair amount still to cover and wanted some new things for them!
