Spiders and Bats!

In science this week we are learning about animals and understanding different life needs and physical characteristics.  We teach this unit several times throughout the year, focusing on animals for that specific season.  So, we are learning about bats, owls, and spiders this week!  The children are all reading a nonfiction selection in their reading groups to continue to build on their understanding.

Here's a look at our week ... well, actually, just today!  With the anticipation of Hurricane Sandy, I tried to cram as much as possible into today in case we miss school!

the information we knew before we read Stellaluna this morning
Our poem for the week; check out Can Teach's website!
the tree made after reading Spinning Spiders; we'll use this as we write about spiders
two of the nonfiction books we read today
the beginning of our spider pop craft
the finished product
Tomorrow we will be reading and putting together our own spider booklets.  I just love Teacher's Helper books!
And as a thank you for reading this very long post, a freebie!  Please check out the spiders and bats activity.  The bats section includes a section using Stellaluna.  If you download, would you please leave a comment?  I'd love to know how you could use this in your classroom!

TPT Sale and a Math Freebie

It is time for a sale!  Click on the picture to go to my TPT store.

DiceMy firsties have been working very hard on learning addition facts.  There are only so many ways to teach these, so I have to be creative so I don't lose their attention!  We love using number cubes and they have become very responsible in the recent weeks.  Granted, I have my number cubes inside of various containers, but they still have done a great job!  So they are ready to step it up with a new activity.  These activity pages are great for a math center or part of Friday Fun - one of my favorite times of the week: math games are being played all over the room.

As you can see, the activity pages are all the same, except for the images at the bottom.  Click {here}to get your free copy!

Animals!

Next week we will be learning about owls, spiders, and bats.  Our science standards state the children will understand animals have different life needs and physical characteristics.  Since it is fall, we are focusing on these specific animals.  We will cover different animals throughout the year.

WP Clipart - the great horned owl
I have been using our science and social studies units to drive the books I choose for reading groups.  I had great difficulty finding a reader on owls to use, so I created a unit for one of my groups.  Here is a selection of pages from the unit that I have in my TPT store.
Included
- 8 page reader
- 3 pages of word work activities (word boxes, fill-in-the-blank, and a word search)
- owl themed handwriting paper for a writing assignment
- comprehension check

Click {here} to purchase it.

The first three to comment and leave an email address will receive the owl packet for free.

Happy Friday!

A Shout-Out and Math Center Day

What a busy week!  Between parent/teacher conferences on Monday, grading papers, lesson planing, grading more papers, Bible Study on Wednesday night, and grading more papers!

Today I'm giving a shout-out to my friend, Andrea, at Reading Toward the Stars! She has a sight word game using words from the 2nd and 3rd grade lists.  This game is different because it has phrases instead of just words.  One of my reading groups played today after they finished their required work and loved it!  Click {here} to get this game from Andrea's TPT store.

This afternoon my friend Cindy, who is our school math lead teacher, visited our classroom while we played math addition games.  We were loud, but had a lot of fun!

These are some of my favorite fall/October activities to do with my firsties.

We LOVE to read!  Here are some of our favorite Halloween stories.  They include ~ Spookley, It's the Great Pumpkin, Stellaluna, Scaredy-Cat Splat!, The Berenstain Bears Trick or Treat, and The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything.

We have been working on writing and solving addition sentences in math.  Here are a few activities that we are doing next week.  Click {here} to get these from my TPT store.

My firsties love puzzles and have enjoyed playing with these.  Some of the puzzles in this pack have numbers on the side; we have been working on counting to 100.  Click {here} to get these!
