Christmas Phonics Freebie!

Merry Christmas!

We had 2 days off of school this week for ice. Back for one day and then off for break! This was a quick activity that my students completed at the end of our reading block. The words are ones that we have either had in spelling or part of our phonics lessons. I didn't even print all of the ornament pictures - just displayed them on my Smart Board from my computer! On these days when you're not sure how to proceed, I wanted to share some free things that I've added to my blog that you can send to your families or print to use at home. Please check out the freebies link at the top of the page. I have added 3 things there in the last week.

A new item that I had the chance to use for one day in my classroom before being shut down was this to practice 10 more, 10 less, 100 more, and 100 less. Prints great on colored paper and I did laminate mine, but that's not necessary.

Just provide your student with a paper clip to use the spinners and markers for the board. We played until we had 5 in a row. There are 4 different boards to download and use.

Double Digit Addition

My second grade class has been busy solving two digit addition problems. They are such hard workers! I was blown away this week, watching one struggle and his team member leaned over his desk and walked him through step-by-step how to solve the problem. 

Math Monday: 1st Grade Magnitude Lessons

Happy New Year!

We spent Christmas and New Year's in Indianapolis with my husband's family, including a trip to the Indianapolis Zoo for Christmas at the Zoo!

Okay, back to real life ...

My first graders are learning about estimation when looking at a group of objects and then decide if there are 3, 30, or 300. Or perhaps there are 7, 70, or 700 M&Ms in the bag. Or perhaps 2, 20, or 200 pencils in the box.

We started by using this Smart Board activity I found on Smart Exchange. Do you know of Smart Exchange?? If not, it's free to join! Download Smart Board activities to use in your classroom. I love it!

This week we plan to complete some of these activities in centers and small groups.

We finished up our lesson with sorting these candy pictures by 2, 20, or 200. We made category headings in our math notebook and then the children cut, sorted, and glued them down under the headings. Click on the image to download your own!

Math Monday: double digit addition and subtraction

Today's Math Monday is focused on what my second graders are learning.

We began double digit addition without regrouping today. I was happily surprised how most of them caught on quickly!

We started by dividing the tens and ones places for the double digit number to help line our numbers up correctly and went for it!

What we've been up to (with a new freebie!)

I can't believe it ... we have 14 more school days! Since we have already administered our end of the year reading and math assessments (and today I finished PALS!), we are reviewing.

Administering PALS tests

I decided to purchase Bubble Gum Math Timed Addition Tests by Fluttering Through First Grade (from their TpT store) to work on fact fluency. My first graders have completely embraced it!

I changed some of the elements to make it work in my classroom. I used these file folders I already had and found large library pockets at my nearby teacher supply store. The children keep their completed quizzes in the pocket. As they master a quiz (with 100%), they get a "bubble gum" sticker, labeled with that quiz to place in their gumball machine. 

 After I check their quiz, I grab the next quiz from my box and place it on the top of their stack and slide everything back into the pocket. I'm amazed how my struggling children are embracing this and so excited about math!

Getting Festive for Fall with the Virginia Bloggers

We have student choice math centers on Fridays.  One of my new favorite activities are clip cards.  I have some support during my math lessons, so when clip cards come out, any adult walking into my room knows exactly how to help!

There are 6 pages of clip cards (one page is shown below), totaling 36 cards.

 I have also included 2 subtraction I Spy printables.  Just print and go!  Provide the children with a magnifying glass and they will be set!  Answer keys are included.
