December Currently

Is it possible?!  December?!?!  I am linking up with Farley for my December Currently at Oh' Boy 4th Grade!
I am so glad that Josh had the weekend off!  We had a lot of fun shopping and eating out (hey - we had 13 people at our house for Thanksgiving, so I didn't want to do any more cooking after that!) and just hanging around the house.

As much as I look forward to all of our fun Christmas projects and activities at school, I would love another day off!  I have so much to do before tomorrow morning!

We upgraded our phones to iPhones yesterday!  But I am having trouble getting all of my music synched from my iPad mini to the phone, so that is on the to-do list today.

One of my favorite Christmas traditions is the Christmas Eve service at church.  It is usually a candlelight service, along with communion.  It is a great way to refocus on the true meaning of Christmas and Jesus' birth.

Are you ready for the BIG sale tomorrow?

Happy Friday!

Happy Friday!  Today I am linking up with Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching for my Five for Friday!
http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2013/11/five-for-friday-linky-party-november-1.html

1. Two of my nephews and a niece (the ones that live here in town, minus the new baby) stopped at our house last night to trick-or-treat.  So glad they came!
2. We have been working on shapes in math.  Yesterday - since the day was already going to be crazy - we made our shape people!

3. Our reading series (SuperKids by Rowland Reading) has a non-fiction magazine with each unit.  We read "Bubbles" today, so we HAD to play after reading!  The children tried to see how big they could get their bubble - check out this picture! We read that if your hands are wet, you can touch a bubble!   The article said that bubbles will drift up if the air is warm and will sink if the air is cold.   We tried next to the air conditioner and on the far side of the room (where it was warmer) to see if it was true.

4. We are getting ready to start our next reading unit, which includes 6 memory words that they will need to spell correctly.  Andrea Crawford from Reading Toward the Stars, is the reading specialist at my school.  She had sets of cards made for the children in her small group with liquid glue to trace.  All of the students made their own set of cards today!  They wrote the word first with a marker, then traced it using a bottle of liquid glue.  We spread them out in the hallway to dry and will use them first thing Monday morning!

5. A nurse from one of the local hospitals came to talk about careers in the medical profession.  She brought some puppet friends along with her.  She had special programs for our kindergarten, first, and second grade classes.  The kids loved it and are very interested in medical jobs now!

Several of my kiddos are really struggling with short vowel sounds and I quickly pulled together a few colored picture cards and 3 printables.  These will be part of my seatwork next week!  Click here or on the image below to grab a set!

Hope you have a great weekend!

FIve for Friday {02-15-13}

Like everybody else, what a busy week!!  I'm jumping right into my Five for Friday and am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching tonight.

fiveforfriday
1. I have some amazingly creative parents.  Here are a couple of the goodies I received yesterday.
Hershey kiss mouse!
"Valentine we go together like milk and cookies."  Included in the bag was a crazy straw and cookies!
2. One of my little firsties was so excited about her valentines, but could not read the names on the cards in her bag.  She ran up to me to ask who it was from and then ran to the child and with a huge hug to each child in our class, she said "Thank you SO much!  I love you and Happy Valentine's Day!"  She melted my heart!

3. My friend, a second grade teacher in my building, is new to TpT!  Brittany is an amazing teacher and I would love to help her store get some fabulous traffic!  She recently finished a word problem activity.  Here are a couple of pictures.  Click on one of the images below or here!

4. I have just finished another word work packet - this one has ing/ink word families.  I'm giving it to my followers as a freebie!  A 15 page packet with activities for a week, including word cards, I have ... who has game cards, Write the Room cards with word boxes, and a recording page (with a couple extra pages included!). I hope you enjoy!  :)

5. I spent a couple of hours with my grandma tonight; my grandfather died unexpectedly in May 2012 and not having him here for our birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving and Christmas have been difficult.  They were amazing together and a godly example for Josh and I, as well as my cousins and their spouses.  I have been blessed!

Have a fabulous weekend!

vowels freebie

One of my groups is ready for long vowels and I decided that I want to introduce long vowels (in which they will be required to spell) through distinguishing the difference with short vowels.  I have a separate sorting activity for each vowel, along with a sentence completion activity.  Click on the image to grab yours!

I know Thanksgiving isn't here yet, but if you're like me, you are already planning your Christmas activities.  Here is my Christmas Addition Activity pack.  It includes number cards 0-20, addition problems with sums of 0-20, 10 blank cards, and 4 roll, add, and color activities.  View the complete unit here.

The first 2 to comment on what you enjoy most about the Christmas holiday AND leave an email address will receive the addition pack for free!

This post will be linked with Manic Mondays and Friday Freebies!
